WMO warns that heat waves will continue in July and August, after June record

the intense heat which has already broken the record for the highest average monthly temperature in June and two records for average daily temperatures in the first half of July will continue for the next two weeks and could last until August, the World Meteorological Organization said today.

The scientific arm of the United Nations forecasts that temperatures will remain above normal in the Mediterranean region, with weekly temperatures of up to 5 degrees Celsius above average.

This extreme weather is becoming an increasingly frequent phenomenon of climate change and is having a major impact on human health, ecosystems, economies, agriculture, energy and water supplies.”, commented the secretary general of the WMOThe teacher Petteri Taalas.

The meteorological services of the United States and Morocco have also issued alerts for high temperatures for the coming weeks, which Taalas described as “urgency” and recalled the importance of reducing greenhouse gas emissions “as quickly and deeply as possible”.

If this situation is not reversed, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change -the highest scientific authority on this matter- estimates that by 2050 around half of the European population could face a high or very high risk of thermal overload in summer.
