mercosur will deliver its response to the new environmental demands of the European Union (EU) in “a few weeks” in order to continue the negotiation of the agreement between both blocs, official Brazilian sources reported on Thursday.
“The answer is technically ready” and Brazil, which holds the rotating presidency of Mercosur this semester, will send it to Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay in the coming days, the director of the Economic Policy Department of the Brazilian Foreign Ministry, Philip Fox-Drummond, said at a press conference.
The document will be discussed internally by the four Mercosur countries and, according to the diplomat, it is expected that it will be sent to the EU in “a few weeks”.
Fox-Drummond did not specify details about that text, which will respond to a document that the EU attached this year to the agreement agreed upon by both blocs in 2019, which establishes new environmental guarantees required by the European part.
“I can anticipate that our response has a very focused focus on sustainable development”declared the Brazilian diplomat, who also reaffirmed that the Lula government intends to review the chapter on government purchases included in the 2019 text.
Fox-Drummond acknowledged that the Mercosur countries will surely not have finished the analysis of the document prepared by Brazil for the summit that will bring together the leaders of the EU and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac) in Brussels next Monday and Tuesday.
However, he pointed out that, within the framework of that summit, “obviously there will be contacts about the process” of negotiations between Mercosur and the EU, which began 25 years ago.
