Half a billion euros for ammunition. The EP gave consent to arm Ukraine. “Absolutely groundbreaking”

The European Parliament approved the amount of EUR 500 million to increase the production of ammunition in order to arm Ukraine and replenish stocks in the Member States. Thus, the MEPs accepted the preliminary agreement of the EU countries from last week regarding the mobilization of the European defense industry and increasing production capacity.

There were two Poles in the negotiating team – Jerzy Buzek and Zdzisław Krasnodębski. In an interview with the Brussels correspondent of Polish Radio, Beata Płomecka, both emphasized that under these regulations, Polish defense companies will be able to count on contracts. Poland is one of the main producers of types of urgently needed ammunition, which is why Polish companies will benefit from the development of European production. The MEPs emphasized that during the negotiations it was possible to provide special support for small and medium-sized companies – producers of raw materials and components necessary for the production of missiles.

Regulations allowing to increase production are also of strategic importance for the Ukrainian counter-offensive. – This is a good signal, perhaps the European Union will impose a greater pace on other organizations, as when it comes to helping Ukraine – said MEP Zdzisław Krasnodębski. Deputy Jerzy Buzek described the agreement of the regulations as a historic event. He added that this is a change in the idea of the action of the pacifist Union, which in a sense decides to provide armed support to those who defend European values. – This is indeed a breakthrough in thinking of the European Union as a whole. This is of strategic importance. These are absolutely groundbreaking activities the former prime minister added.

US approved cluster munitions for Ukraine

Last week, the United States approved the transfer of cluster munitions to Ukraine. The U.S. circumvented a 2009 U.S. law that prohibits the manufacture, use and export of cluster munitions by using a provision in the regulations that allows Department of Defense reserves to be used in cases “important to national security.” The decision was made “due to concerns about the pace of Kiev’s counter-offensive and dwindling Western stockpiles of conventional artillery, and after an internal debate on this controversial weapon,” he explained at the time.
