drama series “succession” aspires to repeat the success achieved last season, when it obtained 25 applications for the Emmyand is presented as the top favorite to lead the nominations of these awards surrounded by uncertainty in its 2023 edition.
The US Television Academy will reveal this Wednesday at 8:30 local time (16:30 GMT) the candidates for these prestigious awards with its mind set on what happens in the afternoon that same day, when the Hollywood Screen Actors Guild (SAG-AFTRA) make public whether or not it is going on strike.
In the case of not reaching an agreement with the big studios, the actors would join the pickets that the Writers Guild (WGA) has maintained since the beginning of May and the American entertainment industry would be paralyzed with the first strike in 63 years that would involve two unions in this sector at the same time.
Thus, the 75th Emmy Awards, scheduled for September 18, is now up in the air since, if the strikes were successful, writers and performers would not attend a world-renowned gala.
Meanwhile, from the US Television Academy they try to offer an image of normality in the hours before some nominations that will be presented by the actress Yvette Brown (“The Black Lady Sketch Show”) and the president of the institution, Frank Scherma.
If the premier category for best drama series left few surprises last year, awarding “Succession”it seems that the production of HBO Max will also reign in 2023 thanks to its last season, the end of which has been classified by the specialized press as “one of the best in television history”
In the shortlist of nominees for best drama series, everything indicates that the HBO Max platform will have other representatives of the stature of “The White Lotus” -which bagged 5 awards in 2022 and won for best limited series- or “The Last of Us”.
The rest of titles with possibilities in this section are “Andor” (”Disney+), “Better Call Saul” (AMC), “The Crown” (Netflix) and “Yellowjackets” (Showtime), among others.
The Roy family dynasty could also expand its tentacles in the best actress in a drama series category because Sarah Snook (“Succession”) part as a favorite of a cast in which it seems that the British Helen Mirren (“1923”) and Bella Ramsey (“The Last of Us”).
In the masculine version of this section, the Chilean Pedro Pascal (“The Last of Us”) and the Mexican Diego Luna (“Andore”) could become the first Latinos to apply in this category since actor Jimmy Smits did the same in 1999.
“Abbott Elementary” and “Ted Lasso” nominated for best comedy
The Serie “Ted Lasso” (Apple TV+) prevailed over Abbott Elementary (“Abbott College”, Disney+) in a fierce battle last year that could also be repeated in 2023. Experts agree that they are the top candidates for best comedy series along with “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”, “Only Murders in the Building” and “The Bear”.
Fifth Brunson (Abbott Elementary), Rachel Bronahan (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”) and the Hispanic Jenna Ortega (“Wednesday”) appear in every nomination pool for best actress in a comedy this year alongside Natasha Lyonne (“Poker Face”).
A fight that seems as even as the one that the iconic Steve Martin and Martin Short (“Only Murders in the Building”), Jason Sudeikis (“Ted Lasso”), Bill Hader (“Barry) and Jeremy Allen White (“The Bear”) as best comedy performers.
Finally, the specialized Hollywood press agrees that productions such as Beef, “Black Bird” either “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” -as well as its leading actors and actresses- have a practically guaranteed place among the nominees in the different limited series sections.
