A volcano has erupted this Monday afternoon in Iceland, about 30 kilometers from the capital, Reykjavik. The eruption occurred after intense seismic activity in the area, according to the country’s Meteorological Office (IMO).
“At the moment, it’s a very small eruption,” said Matthew James Roberts of IMO’s research and services division. The eruption, as they have detailed, occurred around 4:20 p.m. (GMT time) near a small mountain called Litli Hrutur. This area has already suffered the latest eruptions in 2021 and 2022 on the Reykjanes peninsula, southwest of the capital.
The experts of this organization will evaluate where exactly the lava is emerging and how the eruption evolves in the next few hours. Meanwhile, at this moment lava and smoke is emanating from a fissure in the ground on the side of the Fagradalsfjall mountain.
On the other hand, the civil protection service has urged the population not to go to the area since the authorities are evaluating the situation.
