The President of Chile, Gabriel Boric, will begin his first tour of Europe next Wednesday, a trip with a high political, economic and business content that will take him to Spain and France and which will have its zenith in Brussels with participation in the first summit in eight years between the European Union and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac), scheduled for July 17 and 18.
In a statement released this Friday, the La Moneda Palace explains that it is a trip planned “well in advance” to try to neutralize the criticism from a part of the opposition that believes that the president should not leave Chile due to the controversy that arose from some alleged cases of corruption in foundations that extend from the previous Administration and that apparently would affect one of the parties of the government coalition.
“So that everyone knows, we have planned a trip to Europe for a long time because it is important to deepen the issues we have discussed, attract investment to Chile and strengthen common values.”, he explained.
In this context, Boric will land in Spain where on July 14 he will meet with the acting President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, and will be received by the King, Felipe VI, with whom he had a small controversy during the inauguration ceremony in Chile in March last year.
Later, he will travel to France, where he will meet with Emmanuel Macron before leaving for Brussels in the company of his delegation, which includes the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Alberto van Kleberen; of Science and Technology, Aisen Etcheverry, Economy, Nicolás Grau and Energy, Diego Pardow.
In addition to the national strategic plan for the exploitation of lithium, the president has in his portfolio, as master roads, promoting and reinforcing bi-regional dialogue, strengthening peace and sustainable development, added the statement, in which he affirms without specifying that he will hold meetings bilateral agreements with other European leaders.
“On this trip, Boric will aim at mobilizing European private and public financial capital for the benefit of Chilean families, promoting a fair green and digital transition towards the Andean country and modernizing the EU agreement with Chile”, underlines the note before revealing that he will also fly to Switzerland to visit the offices of the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), the largest particle physics laboratory and one of the largest scientific research centers in the world,
“We are invited to a visit to Switzerland where we are going to become part of a great scientific project that will be very important to expand the frontiers of knowledge in the world.”, he concluded about the visit to this body, which studies the universe and has 23 Member States, 10 associated countries and more than 11,000 scientists of 110 nationalities.
He will also hold a meeting with Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director of the World Health Organization (WHO).
