Iberdrola in Brazil partners with Rock in Rio to decarbonise music events

Neoenergia, the second largest energy distributor in Brazil and controlled by the Spanish Iberdrola, announced on Monday an agreement with the organizers of the Rock in Rio for “decarbonize” the great events of the music industry in the Latin American giant.

The agreement with Rock World, the organizer of the major musical events Rock in Rio (Rio de Janeiro) and The Town (Sao Paulo), provides for the development of innovative solutions aimed at minimizing the environmental impact of this type of massive concerts and offset their emissions of polluting gases.

It also contemplates the development of a joint campaign to raise awareness among concert audiences about the need to adopt habits that help preserve the environment and reduce climate change.

In the first edition of The Town, a festival that will bring together close to 500,000 attendees in five nights of concerts next September at the Interlagos racetrack in Sao Paulo, Neoenergia will ensure that all the lighting for the event is generated by solar panels.

The electricity distributor, which serves 16 million customers in five Brazilian states, will also be in charge of mobility without carbon emissions within the racetrack of the largest city in Brazil, for which it will adopt electric vehicles.

Another measure will be the commitment, for each attendee to both The Town and Rock in Rio (700,000 people), to change a conventional lamp for an LED type in schools, hospitals and low-income communities in their concession areas.

“The change of lamps for more efficient and ecological models represents an economy equivalent to the annual consumption of 17,000 Brazilian families for each event”explained the CEO of Neoenergia, Eduardo Capelastegui, at the ceremony in which the agreement was announced at the Museum of Tomorrow in Rio de Janeiro.

Already in the next edition of Rock in Rio, scheduled for September 2024, Neoenergia will also be responsible for ensuring that all the energy consumed by the event comes from renewable sources.

The Iberdrola subsidiary is also one of the large private generators in Brazil and has a generation capacity of 5.1 GW (gigawatts), in a 90% from renewable sources.

“For a fair and inclusive energy transition, we need not only to expand energy generation from renewable sources, but also to educate new generations about sustainable consumption”Capelastegui said.

The executive also explained that Brazil is taking steps to free up the electricity sector and soon all consumers will be able to choose their preferred distributor, so Neoenergia is taking a step to connect and attract new customers.

He said that to attract Brazilian consumers the company is investing both in sports, as a sponsor of the Brazilian women’s soccer team and Olympic athletes, and now for the first time in music.

The director of Brand Reputation of Rock World, Roberta Medina, affirmed that Rock in Rio began to offset its carbon dioxide emissions in 2006 and that it has already avoided the release of 420,000 tons of polluting gases with the measures adopted in 18 of its 22 editions in Brazil, Portugal and Spain.

“But the time has come when we need to go a step further and look for innovative solutions that serve not only our festivals but also the music industry as a whole, and that is why we chose Neoenergia as our partner in this mission”Medina said.
