The president of United States, Joe Biden, has announced this Friday a new ‘road map’ to alleviate the debt of university students after the setback of the Supreme Court, which has revoked the program promoted by its Administration. Specifically, the first measure consists of resort to the so-called Higher Education Lawa legal framework that could facilitate these exemptions for students.
“It’s going to take more time and, in my opinion, it’s the best path for as many borrowers as possible,” he reported at a press conference. This legislation allows the Department of Education to “enforce, pay, pledge, give up, or release any right, title, claim, lien, or demand” related to federal student debt.
Secondly, the White House has explained in a statement that, thanks to the “most affordable payment plan ever created”it will ensure that borrowers can take advantage of it this summer, before loan payments are due, allowing them to not having to make monthly payments and will save over $1,000 (about 920 euros) per year.
Also, it has been announced 12 month transition process which will begin on October 1, 2023 until September 30, 2024 so that “financially vulnerable” borrowers who cannot pay are not considered delinquent.
Biden has criticized the position of the Republicans in voting to repeal his plan to alleviate the debts of college students. “They said ‘no’, literally snatching thousands of dollars in student debt relief that was about to change their lives out of the hands of millions of Americans.” These Republican officials simply couldn’t stomach the thought of bringing relief to working and middle-class Americans.
Republican state officials sued my administration, trying to block relief, even for millions of their own constituents,” the president denounced. He has criticized that the same Republicans who now oppose this plan voted to forgive the debts of businessmen, since many of them were affected. “The hypocrisy is impressive. “Several members of Congress obtained more than a million dollars.
All those loans were forgiven. Do you know how much that program costs? 760 billion dollars. Is my program too expensive? $360 billion more than I proposed in my student debt relief program,” Biden said.
He has added that “for Republicans in Congress, it’s not about reducing the deficit, it’s not about fairness and forgiving loans, it’s just about forgiving the loans that they have to pay back.” In addition, he has criticized the decision of the Supreme Court to “side with him” and has described it as “a mistake”.
“I’m not going to stop fighting to give borrowers what they need, particularly those at the bottom end of the economic scale. So we have to find a new way. And we’re moving as fast as we can,” he declared.
