China’s Shein will produce clothing in Brazil, from where it wants to export to Latin America

The Chinese textile giant Shein announced this Thursday that starting in July it will have a clothing production line in Brazilafter reaching an agreement with a local manufacturer, with the intention of exporting to other countries in the future Latin America.

Production will take place at a plant owned by Compañía de Tejidos Norte de Minas (Coteminas) in the municipality of Macaíba, in the Brazilian northeastern state of Rio Grande do Norte.

The first Shein clothes made in the South American country will be jeans and cotton t-shirts.

The announcement came after a meeting between the Brazilian president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, with the governor of Rio Grande do Norte, Fátima Bezerra, and representatives of Shein and its local partners, in Brasilia.

The head of Shein in Latin America, Marcelo Clauretold reporters that the start of activities in Rio Grande do Norte is part of the “commitment” to transfer part of its production from China to Brazil.

As he explained, the company’s objective is to close alliances with up to 2,000 Brazilian manufacturers in the coming years.

In April, the Chinese brand announced investments worth 750 million reais (155 million dollars or 140 million euros) in Brazil with the intention of “increase the competitiveness of textile factories” from the country.
