The Australian mining company Galan Lithium will be able to develop a project for the extraction of lithium in the enormous Salar del Hombre Muerto, after the northern Argentine province of Catarmarca granted it permission, the company announced Monday.
In a statement, the company specified that the Catamarca Ministry of Mining granted it the initial permits for the development of phase 1 of the lithium brine project. dead man west (HMW, for its acronym in English).
The permit allows for pre-construction activities such as commissioning of the new camp, topsoil removal, and preliminary testing activities to ensure soil quality.
When these activities are completed, Galan said he will be ready to accelerate construction of the phase 1 ponds with a view to producing a lithium chloride concentrate.
In the huge Salar del Hombre Muerto, shared by the Argentine provinces of Salta and Catamarca, other lithium-producing companies also operate, such as the Korean Posco, the American Livent and the Canadian Lithium South.
Argentina currently has a portfolio of 38 lithium projects, of which two are already in full production and in the process of expansion and one has just recently started commercial extraction.
Due to the potential of the projects in advanced construction, Argentina expects to climb to third place as a world lithium producer shortly.
