The President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, will formally annex the occupied regions of Ukraine to Russia during a major speech in Moscow tomorrow. It will thus sign the treaties for the annexation of the Ukrainian regions of Donetsk, Lugansk, Kherson and Zaporizhiathe Kremlin announced today.

It comes after Moscow-backed pro-Russian governments in Lugansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson held referendums last weekend on whether to go ahead with the measure.

The armed Russian soldiers who carried the ballot boxes from door to door left no doubt about the results, and Ukraine, along with its Western allies, vowed not to recognize the results.

The spokesman for the Russian Presidency, Dmitri Peskov, said in his daily press conference that the event will take place in the Saint George room of the Grand Kremlin Palace at 3:00 p.m. (12:00 GMT) and will include an important speech by Putin.

The leaders of those regions arrived last night on a common flight to the Russian capital.

The day before, the leaders of Jersón, Volodímir Saldo; from Zaporizhia, Yevgueni Balitski; from Donetsk, Denis Pushilin; and from Lugansk, Leonid Pásechnik, formally asked Putin to incorporate his territories into Russia.

According to the results released today by the pro-Russian authorities with one hundred percent of the ballots counted, between 87.05 and 99.23% of voters in the territories partially controlled by Russian forces in eastern and southern Ukraine supported annexation to Russia.

Both houses of the Russian Parliament are expected to formally endorse the annexation agreements early next week.

The Russian Senate plans to debate that issue on October 4. Before, the incorporation has to receive the approval of the Russian Duma or Lower House, which meets for an extraordinary session a day before. (YO)
