Who is Jarbas Barbosa, the new director of PAHO?

The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) today chose who will chair it from February 2023 to replace Carissa F. Etienne, from Dominica, who has led the organization since 2012.

The appointment was among five candidates after the Colombian government withdrew support from Fernando Ruíz Gómez. This is how they turned out:

  • Dr. Camilo Alleyne (presented by Panama)
  • Dr. Jarbas Barbosa Da Silva Jr. (presented by Brazil)
  • Dr. Florence Duperval Guillaume (presented by Haiti)
  • Dr. Nadine Flora Gasman Zylbermann (presented by Mexico)
  • Dr. Daniel Salinas (presented by Uruguay)

In the first two rounds of voting, three candidates were eliminated (Flora Gasman, Salinas and Duperval). While in the fourth round, Barbosa obtained 21 votes over the 16 of the Panamanian during the 30th Pan American Sanitary Conference.

PAHO explained that Barbosa will assume the mandate from February 1, 2023 and will last five years. He currently held the deputy director of the agency.

Since 2007, he joined PAHO as manager of the Health Surveillance and Disease Prevention and Control Area, while in 2011 he was Secretary of Health Surveillance of the Brazilian Ministry of Health and President Director of the National Sanitary Surveillance Agency. (ANVISA) of Brazil from 2015 to 2018.

He holds a doctorate from the Federal University of Pernambuco in Brazil and specialized in public health and epidemiology at the National School of Public Health (ENSP), Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz), in Rio de Janeiro. He has a master’s degree in medical sciences and a doctorate in public health from the State University of Campinas, in São Paulo. (YO)
