Denmark confirms first two cases of omicron variant

Health authorities danish confirmed this Sunday the first cases of infected with the omicron variant of the coronavirus, two travelers from South Africa.

“We have finished with the sequencing of the PCR tests of two travelers and we can confirm that they are two cases of the omicron variant. It was foreseeable, our strategy is to continue with the intense surveillance of contagion in the country, “the state-run Serum Institute said in a statement.

The two people are in isolation and authorities have launched close contact tracing.

The new variant, discovered in South Africa, has led several countries to suspend flights to southern Africa, due to the high number of mutations it presents, which has led to it being classified by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a variant of risk.

Denmark now requires a negative coronavirus test for travelers from South Africa and six other countries in the area (Lesotho, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia and Eswatini).

The Danish health authorities also recommend that all those who arrive in the country from those countries from the 12th to do a PCR test and isolate themselves until they have a negative result up to six days after their entry.
