Venezuela and Colombia fine-tune security details for the reopening of the border

The president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, affirmed this Monday that his Government coordinates security details, together with the authorities of Colombia for the reopening of the common border, scheduled for next Monday, September 26.

“We are coordinating all the security details so that this first step, which we are going to take on the 26th, is an auspicious step to move towards where we must go (…) to a total, absolute and free opening of the entire border. between Colombia and Venezuela said the president in a televised act.

Maduro maintained that the Minister of Defense of Venezuela, Vladimir Padrino Lopezhas already established communications with his Colombian counterpart, Iván Velásquez, to coordinate the security plans that allow -he assured- the combat of criminal gangs that make the “heavy life” citizens living in the border region.

He also said that Colombia’s Transportation Minister, Guillermo Reyes, will arrive in Venezuela tomorrow to discuss issues in this area, although he did not offer further details.

“We are working to assist in the beginning of an economic, commercial and human opening, which is the most important thing. Hopefully, at the end, of the humanitarian crisis that, breaking human rights, affected millions of people, almost relatives to each other, on both sides of the border”, the head of state told reporters in New York.

When asked about the possibility of meeting on that date with Ripe, Petro answered: “We haven’t dealt with that issue yet, we’ll see if there’s a first meeting.”

The total reopening of the border, closed to the passage of vehicles since 2015 and with restricted circulation for pedestrians for long periods, was announced simultaneously last week by Petro Y Ripewho indicated that, in addition, flights and cargo transport will be reactivated.

Regarding this measure, repair work began today on the Simón Bolívar international bridge, which was closed to vehicular traffic for almost seven years.
