Macron calls on Iran to stop aiding Russia in the war against Ukraine

The French President, Emmanuel Macronasked his Iranian counterpart, Ebrahim Raisí, this Saturday, that Tehran immediately stop providing support to Russia in the war against Ukrainein particular with drones which are used for attack operations.

In a statement, the Élysée explained that in a telephone conversation, Macron alerted Raisí to the “seriousness of the consequences”both in security and humanitarian terms, of the delivery of these drones, which have become a regular instrument of Russian attacks against Ukrainian cities and infrastructure.

In practice, Iran has become one of the main suppliers, if not the main one, to equip itself with weapons technologies key with which to compete with the western equipment that is coming to the Ukrainian Army.

It must be borne in mind that kyiv’s allies have established a strict embargo on Russia not only for weapons, but also for industrial components that could have military use.

The French president also showed Raisí his “concern” by the trajectory of the Iranian nuclear program.

A warning that comes ten days after the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) revealed on the 31st of last month that Iran increased its reserves of uranium enriched with a purity of 60 by almost a third between mid-February and mid-May. %, a level close to that needed to make atomic bombs.

Macron, in any case, insisted on the will of France and its European partners to “find a diplomatic solution”although for that he stressed the importance of Tehran taking “concrete and verifiable de-escalation measures”.

and that it fits “without delay” to its international obligations and to the commitments it had assumed on this matter before the IAEA on March 4.

Among those commitments was to reactivate the surveillance cameras of its nuclear facilities, which allowed the experts of this UN body to carry out remote supervision, and to extend the inspection permits.

The French head of state also took advantage of the conversation with Raisí to demand the “immediate release” of four Frenchmen imprisoned in Iran whom Paris considers “State hostages”.

On May 12, Iran agreed to release two Frenchmen who were in the same situation, and who were in a worrying state of health.

The two leaders, always according to the Elysee, spoke of the international situation in the Middle East. Macron reiterated “the constant commitment to stability and security” and stressed that it is urgent to work to strengthen regional cooperation to face the “common challenges”.
