The four children who disappeared for 40 days in the Colombian jungle are found alive

The president of Colombia, Gustavo Petroannounced on Friday that the four children who disappeared for 40 days in the jungle were found alive, after a plane crash on May 1, in a case that has kept Colombians in suspense and that now “will remain in history ”, declared the president.

The children were alone and received medical attention, Petro told the press upon his return to Bogotá from Cuba, where he went to sign a ceasefire agreement with the guerrillas of the National Liberation Army.

The president said that the minors – 13, 9 and 4 years old and an 11-month-old baby – are a “example of survival”, after spending more than a month lost in the jungle after the crash of the plane in which they were traveling with their mother, who died in the accident.

Petro also commented on the news in a message on Twitter with a photo of members of the rescue team in the middle of a jungle area, but in which the indigenous minors are not seen.

The search in the jungle was carried out by soldiers and indigenous people from communities in the area. The armed forces had said from the beginning that they held out the hope of finding them alive.

In fact, one month after the plane crash, the search teams reported that they had found human footprints 3.2 kilometers northwest of the place where the plane crashed in which three adults and four minors were traveling. With this clue and as the days passed without finding any body, the hope was maintained that the minors were still alive, that they had changed course, that they were alone and struggling to survive.

The Cessna C206 plane in which the seven occupants were traveling on May 1 crashed on the route from Araracuara to San José del Guaviare, in central Colombia, when it reported an engine failure.
