Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met remotely last night with the Swedish activist Greta Thunberg and other experts and climate advocates to assess the consequences of the destruction of the Nova Jakovka dam and look for formulas to prevent the catastrophe from repeating itself.
“We have established a high-level international task force on Russia’s environmental crimes. This group will consolidate global efforts to hold Russia responsible for ecocide in Ukraine. The number of ecosystems that have been destroyed or brought to the brink of extinction due to this latest Russian terrorist act is already in the thousands,” Zelenski denounced at the end of this meeting.
According to the chairman of the Ukrainian presidential office, Andriy Yermak, Thunberg expressed her sympathies to the Ukrainians in the face of the environmental disaster which involves the destruction of the dam in southern Ukraine and the hydroelectric power station of which this infrastructure was a part. Thunberg said during the meeting that she “is prepared to put pressure on the relevant international organizations” for a forceful response to the disaster.
The young activist also said that she hopes “receive recommendations on exactly how you can help” in this crisis. In addition to Thunberg, former Swedish Foreign Minister Margot Wallstrom and former Irish President Mary Robinson, among many other climate activists, participated in the remote meeting with Zelenski. A fragment of the conversation can be seen in a video released by the Ukrainian presidential office.
Zelensky announced the creation of a “high-level international working group” to “consolidate the efforts of the entire world to hold Russia accountable for ecocide in Ukraine.” According to the Ukrainian authorities, Russia deliberately blew up the Nova Jakovka dam and hydroelectric power stationlocated in the territory occupied by Moscow in southern Ukraine, to hinder a possible Ukrainian advance and punish the civilian population.
