Argentina’s candidacy to the OECD has not had any progress in the last year

The application to enter the OECD Argentina, which a year ago was left out of the accession process unlike what happened with Brazil, Peru, Romania, Croatia and Bulgaria, has not made any progress since then.

The Secretary General of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), Mathias Cormannacknowledged this Thursday that “there has been no change of status” at the press conference at the end of the annual ministerial meeting, when asked by Argentina.

cormann He took pains to point out thatwe continue to maintain a very positive commitment“and a relationship”positive” for a long time. To illustrate, he referred to the fact that this country has recently joined the inclusive forum for the reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.

Last year, Argentina was excluded from the opening of the accession process because it had not complied with all the requirements that had been requested.

Since then, the other five countries that did manage to open the accession process have submitted their initial memoranda so that their legislation, policies and practices can be evaluated against the standards of the OECD.

This technical evaluation, which is already underway, involves 26 committees of the organization, with a questionnaire sent to the governments of six aspiring countries and an exchange procedure that usually ends in recommendations for reform, explained the general secretary.

To demonstrate their political support for this phase, they attended the ministerial of the OECD the Peruvian Prime Minister, Alberto Otárola, and the Brazilian Foreign Minister, Mauro Vieira.

The OECD It currently has 38 member states, including four Latin American ones: Mexico (it was the first to join, in 1994), Chile, Colombia and Costa Rica, which held one of the vice-presidencies of the ministerial, along with New Zealand.

In total, 55 countries, the European Union and various international organizations such as the World Trade Organization (WTO), the International Energy Agency (IEA) and UNESCO were represented at this two-day meeting in Paris.
