Former Vice President of the United States (USA) Mike Pence (2017-2021) has presented this Monday the documentation before the Federal Election Commission to attend the Republican Party primaries ahead of the elections presidential elections of 2024.
Pence plans to officially launch his candidacy with a speech this Wednesday in Iowa, coinciding with his 64th birthday, and later that same day he plans to participate in a meeting with citizens organized by CNN in Des Moines, the capital of that state.
In this way, Pence joins a large group of candidates for the Republican nomination for the US Presidency, such as the former president donald trump (20217-2021); the Governor of Florida, Ron DeSantis; former US ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley; former Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson and South Carolina Senator Tim Scott. Together with them, businessmen Vivek Ramaswamy, Ryan Binkley and Perry Johnson have presented their candidacy, as well as broadcaster Larry Elder.
Trump leads the polls
According to the weighted average of polls carried out by the FiveThirtyEight website, Trump is currently leading the polls as a favorite to clinch the Republican nomination for President, followed by DeSantis, Pence, Haley and Ramaswamy.
Pence counts as collateral the four years he served as vice president during Trump’s tenure. He was previously a congressman from 2001-2013 and Governor of Indiana (2013-2017). He is supported by the ‘Committed to America’ super PAC, which he launched in mid-May and co-chairs with former Texas congressman Jeb Hensarling and veteran Republican consultant Scott Reed.
A Super PAC is a fundraising organization that can collect donations from individuals, corporations, and unions and spend unlimited amounts of funds.
of conservative convictions
Man of deep religious convictionsPence can be a strong rallying cry for evangelical voters, who are often addressed by talking about their faith and the issues that matter to them, such as anti-abortion and pro-religious freedom policies.
In that sense, Pence has made it clear that he supports states passing restrictive laws to further limit access to abortion and believes that the Mifepristone abortion pill, the most widely used in the US to terminate pregnancies, should not be marketed. At the federal level, he has defended the existence of legislation that ban abortion after the 15th week of gestation.
During the storming of the Capitol on January 6, 2021, Pence, who on that day was acting as president of the Senate by virtue of his position as vice president of the country, he ignored Trump’s calls to obstruct the ratification of Democrat Joe Biden as US president after winning the elections.
