That is the resolution, proposed after a last meeting led by France and Brazil, which was adopted in plenary session this Friday at the Parisian headquarters of the Unesco.
The negotiators, meeting since Monday, did not address the core of the issues until Wednesday night, after two days of blockade by the Gulf countries, China, Brazil or India, on whether to vote or not in the event that there was not unanimity during the examination of the draft treaty. In the end, it was decided to resolve that issue later.
The 175 countries were meeting in the French capital for the second round of five negotiation sessions that seek to draw up a binding treaty by the end of 2024 that covers the entire life cycle of plastic.
The beginning of this treaty, highly anticipated due to the growing magnitude of the plastic crisis, which adds to the climate crisis and the one of biodiversitywas decided in February 2022 in Nairobi, at the headquarters of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP).
The annual production of plastic it has doubled in the last 20 years to reach a level of 460 million tons. By 2060, it could triple if left unchecked.
The countries must reach an agreement despite their divergent ambitions and the pressure exerted by NGOs and, also, by certain industries, supported by countries producing Petroleum.
After the next meeting in Kenya, the negotiations will continue in April 2024 in Canada and will end in South Korea at the end of 2024.
