The second tropical depression of 2023 to form in the Atlantic Basin strengthened on Friday to become Tropical Storm Arlene, the first named system in the current hurricane season and moving slowly across the Gulf of Mexico.

According to the most recent bulletin from the National Hurricane Center (NHC), Arlene has maximum sustained winds of 40 miles per hour (65 km/h) and, given its foreseeable trajectory, has not yet merited the issuance of alerts or warnings in coastal areas.

The storm, which emerged from tropical depression number two that formed on Thursday, the day the hurricane season officially started in the Atlantic, is located 265 miles (425 kilometers) west of Fort Myers, on the west coast of Florida , and 340 miles (550 kilometers) north-northwest of Cuba.

It is moving south near 5 miles per hour (7 kilometers per hour) and is expected to pick up slightly tonight, before weakening until it becomes a remnant low pressure on Saturday, according to the NHC forecast. , based in Miami (Florida).
