Aderrien Murry is an 11-year-old black boy who loves to play and record videos at home. But last Saturday his life almost ended because was shot by a police officer, also black. The officers were alerted to a domestic dispute and showed up at Aderrien’s home. His mother Nakala Murry recalls: “They started kicking the door down.”
The patrol ordered the whole family out into the street. When Aderrien appeared unarmed down the hall, a policeman, without further ado, pulled the trigger and hit him in the chest. It was a great shock, says Nakala: “He was bleeding. I hugged him. I covered his wound. He was bleeding from his mouth.” The boy did not understand why he had been shot. Through tears, she asked her mother if she had done anything wrong.
The minor was hospitalized with a punctured lung, several broken ribs and a damaged liver. Ken Featherstone, the mayor of Indianola, Mississippi, confirms that they just got discharged and they are going to collaborate in the investigation: “They are going to have transparency on the part of the city council. There are no reasons to hide anything.”
But Aderrien’s family is outraged. They are not satisfied with the suspension of employment and salary of the police officer who shot the child. The one who was recently named the best agent in the department. They have called a demonstration to demand that fired and prosecuted.
