The FSB announced the prevention of sabotage by Ukrainian special services at the Kalinin and Leningrad nuclear power plants. According to RBC with reference to the press service of the department, the attackers intended to undermine more than 30 power transmission towers.

Saboteurs managed to blow up one pillar and mine four more at the Leningrad nuclear power plant, as well as plant bombs under seven pillars at the Kalinin nuclear power plant, located in the Tver region, the ministry said. It is assumed that this was supposed to lead to “a shutdown of nuclear reactors, disruption of the normal operation of nuclear power plants”, and also cause “significant damage to the economy and reputation of the Russian Federation.” The agency claims that the sabotage was planned to be carried out on the anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War.

Two Ukrainian citizens were detained, another Ukrainian and a Russian were put on the wanted list. In addition, according to the FSB, “two accomplices of saboteurs from among Russian citizens who assisted them in providing them with means of communication and vehicles with fake state registration plates” were detained.

A criminal case was initiated under articles on sabotage (part 1 of article 281 of the Criminal Code, up to 20 years in prison) and illegal arms trafficking (part 1 of article 222.1 of the Criminal Code, up to eight years in prison). The suspects were arrested. The FSB claims that they are confessing.
