COVID-19: Occupancy in ICUs continues to rise in Austria despite restrictions

3,246 people are currently hospitalized with covid-19 in Austria, including 619 in serious condition.

The different restrictions decreed this month against the pandemic in Austria have not yet stopped the pressure on intensive care units (ICU), where about 30% of the capacities are occupied by patients with covid, health authorities in Vienna reported on Thursday .

According to data published today, 3,246 people are currently hospitalized with covid-19 in Austria, including 619 in serious condition, the highest value since last April 12 when they were 611.

Since restrictions for unvaccinated people began last November 8 – which culminated in the current general confinement for the entire population as of last Monday – the number of patients in ICUs has risen 51%.

At the same time, health authorities reported today 13,592 new coronavirus infections in the last 24 hours and 53 new deaths.

This Thursday there were in the Central European country, of 8.9 million inhabitants, almost 152,500 active covid-19 infections.

Meanwhile, the coronavirus vaccination campaign is progressing at a moderate pace, with only 66.2% of the Austrian population immunized with the full schedule, while more than 70% have received at least the first dose.

On Wednesday, just over 117,000 doses were administered throughout the country, with 10.2% being the first and 78.4% the third.

Austria’s healthcare system has just over 2,100 ICU beds. (I)
