The United States Secret Services have arrested this Tuesday the driver of a rented truck that crashed into the security barriers of the White House -it is not yet known if intentionally-, although it has not left any injuries or notable damages. A witness has further claimed that investigators found a Nazi swastika flag apparently coming from inside the truck, which crashed into barriers in Lafayette Square, adjacent to the White House grounds.
“Preliminary investigation reveals that the driver may have intentionally struck security barriers in Lafayette Square,” Anthony Guglielmi, the Secret Service’s communications chief, said on Twitter. In one of the videos broadcast on social networks, the truck is shown crashing into the barricades. After crashing once, the driver hit the barriers a second time.
“I looked back and saw that the U-Haul truck had plowed into the barricade. I backed up behind a guy in a golf cart and I recorded the video on my phone. After he saw it ram again, he didn’t want to be near the truck, and he left,” says one of the witnesses. An earlier Secret Service Guglielmi tweet said no one from the White House or the Secret Service was hurt.
The exact location of President Joe Biden at that time it was not clear. She met with the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, Kevin McCarthy, at the White House on Monday night. The nearby Hay Adams Hotel was evacuated at the request of the Secret Service, the Washington Post reported, citing a hotel official, while the Secret Service closed some roads and pedestrian paths around the park to minimize risks.
A spokesman for the Washington Fire Department has detailed that a call was received at 9:40 p.m., for which they describedor as a suspicious package investigation. There was soon a major police and public safety response, before investigators determined that the contents of the nearly empty truck were harmless.
