Since its invention in 2008 cryptocurrencies they have become a valid and popular method of payment, especially in countries like El Salvador, where it has been adopted as legal tender.

But more than a decade ago, two years after its creation, bitcoin’s creators were still not making real-life transactions. It wasn’t until Laszlo Hanyeczminer and developer, came up with the idea of using cryptocurrency to make real payments.

On May 18, 2010, Laszlo made an interesting post on the Bitcoin Talk forum: 10,000 bitcoins in exchange for several large pizzas. At the time, 10.00 bitcoins was about $40 USD, which was enough value to buy a pizza with delivery included.

At first, none of the forum members took the post seriously, they thought it was too much value for what they were looking for. But Laszlo did not lose patience, just four days later, May 22, 2010, developer made first bitcoin purchase.

Jeremy Sturdivant, an 18-year-old who goes by the name Jercos on the forum, read Laszlo’s ad and decided to participate in his pizza delivery. Jeremy bought pizzas from Papa John’s and sent them to the address Laszlo provided because he “wanted to make the purchase easier.”

Just a few months later, the value of bitcoin has skyrocketed to a level never seen before: what used to be the equivalent of $40 is now around $600.

Although Laszlo became famous for the first transaction with bitcoin, he also collaborated on the code of this cryptocurrency, which is why he cares about popularizing its use. He even rewrote the Bitcoin code for Mac OS operating systems, which was previously only available for Windows systems.

To this day, the pizzas that Laszlo bought are known as the most expensive pizzas ever. However, the developer is proud of your purchase.
