In March 2021, the authorities in Carroll, Iowa (in the USA) soon found out that they were not going to carry out a routine traffic control. This is what happened when they went to verify the identity of a driver they stopped, discovering that about him He had a warrant out for his arrest from the state of Illinois. He was not only wanted, but he had stolen the vehicle he was in. This one, without saying a word, started suddenly.

The policeman who was the protagonist of this operation, Patrick McCarty, was blunt from the outset: “Stop the car, man. Stop the car.” But the pilot paid no attention and took the agent ahead of him, who he climbed on the hood to avoid being run over. Up there, the agent kept insisting: “Stop the damn car. Get out of the damn car… Step on the brake.”

Far from stopping, the car sped up. The sequence shudders. Patrick climbed up to the roof for a better hold. And then a frantic chase began, where It reached 80 kilometers per hour. It was an agonizing minute at full speed, recorded by the patrol car. In an industrial area, the fugitive swerved across a field and the police officer was thrown. This suffered a violent fall, with the bad luck of ending up in a ditch.

A colleague went to assist McCarty, and McCarty told him that he was fine and to go after the criminal. The reality is that Patrickk had a broken lumbar vertebra and could barely move. He affirmed that it is one of the worst moments of his life: “I saw life pass before my eyes. My hope, my wish, my goal was to be able to get out of there and be with my family: two children and my wife at home.”

These images that appear in the video that accompanies these lines have been crucial in the trial against the driver, held this week. He has been sentenced to five years in prison.
