Ecuadorian unions warn Lasso against possible anti-worker decrees or privatizations

He Unitary Front of Workers (FUT)the most important trade union center in Ecuadorwarned this Thursday with reacting if the Government of William Lassothat Wednesday dissolved parliamentissued laws against workers or privatization of state companies.

José Villavicencio, president of FUT, described as “dictatorial” to the Lasso government for having declared the call “cross death”a legal norm to dissolve the National Assembly (Parliament), anticipate general elections and govern until then through executive decrees.

Villavicencio expressed the fear of the unions about the possibility that Lasso could issue decrees that expedite processes of flexibility and job insecurity, as well as reduction of rights in terms of social security.

Lasso could affect with decrees of law “individual and collective rights of workers”, and even criminalize social protests that can generate this type of measures, pointed out the union leader.

For this reason, Villavicencio summoned all the social organizations of the country to a great convention that will take place in Quito on June 3, to evaluate the situation and define eventual actions.

On his side, Mesías Tatamuez, another of the FUT leaders, assured that the unions are not afraid of the “cross death” decreed on Wednesday by the ruler and by which he dissolved the Assembly.

The unions, he said, have raised for several months the slogan of “everyone leaves”including Lasso and the legislators, whom he considered jointly responsible for the complex situation in the country.

Marcela Arellano, another of the leaders, said that the FUT, at this juncture, will reinforce the defense of the “Decent job” and the fight against any attempt to precarious work.

“We will not allow a labor flexibility reform that only tries to make working conditions precarious,” Arellano reiterated, referring to comments by some authorities about the possibility of issuing decrees on new forms of employment and hiring of labor.

The unions will also mobilize if the Government issues decrees to privatize state companies, considering that the country needs, rather, “quality public services”held.

In short, said the union leader, the FUT will ensure “the defense of decent work”, will fight “against job insecurity”will defend social security and prevent privatizations.

If the Government intends to pass these reforms through decree laws, “we are going to get up”, Arellano stressed.
