Brazil investigate a suspected contagion avian influenza A (H5N1) in a person residing in the state of Espirito Santo, in the southeast of the country, where this week the first confirmed cases were detected in wild birdsHe said Ministry of Health.
A 61-year-old man, who worked in a park where three wild birds tested positive for bird flu highly pathogenic (HPAI) virus, is being tested and is in isolation after displaying mild flu symptoms, the ministry said in a statement.
A reference laboratory in Espirito Santo is analyzing samples from the man and 32 other people who also work in the park, he added, noting that no confirmed cases of influenza A have ever been reported in the country.
Although humans can contract H5N1cases remain rare and health authorities around the world have said the risk to people is low.
Brazil, the world’s largest poultry exporter, is taking a more cautious stance following detection of the H5N1 subtype in wild birds.
Transmission of the highly pathogenic virus subtype to the country’s commercial flock would put nearly $10 billion in chicken meat exports at risk, as importing nations may impose new purchase bans.
