Chile asks “all parties” in Ecuador to “respect the constitutional order”

the chancellor of ChiliAlberto van Klaveren, assured this Wednesday that the Government is following “with much attention” the crisis in Ecuador and asked “to all parties” from the country “respect the constitutional order” after the president’s decision William Lasso to dissolve the National Assembly in the midst of a political trial against him.

“We are following very closely what is happening in Ecuador and with much respect. We believe that this situation should be observed with special care.” said the Chilean minister in statements to journalists.

In a message to the nation, Lasso decreed this Wednesday to dissolve the National Assemblywith an opposition majority, and call early general elections, so that he will govern by decree until his successor takes office.

Lasso relies on a legal mechanism known as “cross death” and made the announcement the day after appearing before the Assembly to make his defense argument against the accusation made by the opposition for an alleged crime of embezzlement (embezzlement).

The “cross death”, contemplated in the 2008 Constitution, allows the conservative president to dissolve Parliament instead of waiting for the second day of debate on the motion of censure, in which 92 votes are required to remove him, equivalent to two thirds of the hemicycle.

“There is a constitutional order that is in force in Ecuador and our aspiration is that all parties respect that constitutional order”Van Klaveren said.

The opposition leader and former president of Ecuador Rafael Correa (2007-2017) called Lasso’s decision illegal, while the Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador (Conaie) denounced a “cowardly self-coup.”

“That’s all I can say at the moment, it’s a process that is ongoing,” he added.

In a subsequent statement, the Chilean Foreign Ministry appealed “to mutual understanding and dialogue as ways to overcome this complex moment.”

“The Government of Chile trusts that the political crisis that affects the sister country of the Republic of Ecuador, will be resolved through the democratic and institutional mechanisms provided for in its constitutional norms, with strict adherence and respect to the rule of law,” he reiterated. the notice.
