The war in Ukraine has been one of the focuses of the conversation. “In Europe we are experiencing a questioning of democratic values, and it is important to underline Biden’s commitment“, asserted the president, who confirmed that both have spoken “long and extensive” about the situation in Ukraine and have stressed NATO’s unity in defending the country’s territorial integrity.

“We have remembered that in this war there is an aggressor and an assaultedand that nobody wanted war except President Putin”. “For peace to be just and lasting, it has to be aligned with the principles set out in the UN charteruntil that happens, we have launched our message of support for Ukraine”, added the President of the Government. Words that he later specified by stating that “any diplomatic conversation that is opened must first have the support of Ukraine”.

Both presidents have also addressed the challenges of artificial intelligence, as well as the energy transformation linked to climate change. Issues, Sánchez said, in which both leaders have been aligned: “Renewable energy is much more competitive from the point of view of cost,” he stressed. Likewise, he has highlighted the need for work together for the next COP28.

Subsequently, Sánchez explained, they have entered the bilateral agenda from the point of view of the EU and the US. The Spanish president has remarked that he has conveyed to Biden the main interests of Spain in the presidency of the European Council next semester and has highlighted some of the issues they have dealt with, such as the decision of the Spanish government to join the Artemis Agreements, a project international led by the US to put humans on the Moon in 2025: “We have strengthened the agreement between NASA and the new Spanish Space Agency… logically we have talked about Palomares, about initiatives on gender equality or LGTBI rights”, highlighted Sánchez.
