The EU Commissioner for Agriculture, Janusz Wojciechowski, has become the target of criticism after it turned out that he did not take part in the debate on agriculture and the Green Deal, which took place on Wednesday in the European Parliament. The absence of such an important politician was noticed by Norbert Lins, a German MEP from the centre-right European People’s Party and chairman of the agriculture committee in the European Parliament.
I wonder where the Commissioner for Agriculture is?
– He was asking.
The PiS politician appeared at a later meeting on the crisis in the countries located in the east of the EU. And although he quickly found himself, he was reminded of his earlier absence just as quickly. “We expect the Agriculture Commissioner to show respect and be present at the agricultural policy debate,” said EPP leader Manfred Weber. As Politico writes, Wojciechowski did not respond to Weber’s remark, nor did he comment on his absence, even when he finally spoke. Perhaps it is not surprising, because – as Andrzej Halicki (PO) says Politico, such absences are to happen to him not infrequently. So what to comment on ordinary everyday life. However, Halicki is of a different opinion, who believes that the EU commissioner should resign from his position, because – here is a quote – “we do not have a commissioner for agriculture”.
Janusz Wojciechowski defends his actions
Previously, Janusz Wojciechowski defended the Union’s policy towards farmers. At the beginning of the week, he pointed out that since the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, Poland has supported farmers on the largest scale of all member states. He noted that since April last year, the European Commission has approved national aid in the amount of EUR 620 million.
Janusz Wojciechowski was also present during the session of the parliamentary agriculture committee. There he presented information on the activities of Wspólna in connection with the situation of agriculture caused by the war in Ukraine. He explained that the scale of aid for Polish farmers was unprecedented. He stressed that thanks to his actions, the crisis reserve was activated for the first time in history. Janusz Wojciechowski also responded to the criticism of the EU’s conduct towards Ukraine. He assured that the European Commission agreed to state aid for farmers from the Member States. He explained that in the case of Poland it consisted of subsidies for fertilizers and cereals. He also added that as part of the aforementioned crisis reserve, funds were allocated, among others, for: to help apple and pig producers.
