United States: Florida schoolchildren will only use transparent backpacks

Students from Broward County schools, one of three that make up the South Florida metropolitan area (USA)., they will only be able to carry transparent backpacks and purses as of the next school year, a measure designed to prevent violent incidents with firearms.

Broward County school authorities released the announcement on social media this Saturday, which stipulates that the regulation will enter into force from August 21the first day of the 2023-2024 school year.

According to authorities, the purpose of this requirement is to add greater security throughout the school district and provide “additional guarantees for students, staff and teachers.”

The official communiqué states that the backpacks must be transparent and all the inside content visible.

The only exceptions allowed will be small, non-transparent bags for personal hygiene items, thermal food containers, school-approved sports-specific bags for athletic equipment, and musical instrument cases, previously permitted.

“By enforcing this requirement, we aim to prevent potential security issues and foster a safe learning environment”says the statement.

Broward County is the sixth largest public school system in the United States with more than 250,000 students.

Florida was the scene on February 14, 2018 of a bloody school incident when Nikolas Cruz, who was 19 years old at the time, shot inside Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, a city located in Broward County, killing 17 people between students and teachers.
