The UN expert who watches over respect for the rights of the LGBTIQ+ communityVíctor Madrigal-Borloz, today begins an official visit to the United States to examine how the laws that seek to protect this group from violence and discrimination are being applied.
“This visit will give me an important opportunity to evaluate the implementation of human rights standards on the eradication of violence and discrimination against lesbians, gays, bisexuals, trans and people of diverse gender in the country”, indicated the United Nations rapporteur.
Madrigal-Borloz will observe if there are concrete advances in this area and based on this, it will identify the most urgent pending issues, and offer its recommendations to all those who have an influence on the respect of the rights of LGBT people, such as activists, authorities and religious and business leaders.
In addition to visiting the capital of the United States, Washington DC, the rapporteur will carry out his mission in the states of Alabama, Florida and California.
The expert’s mandate was created and depends on the UN Human Rights Council, to which he will present a report of his observations on the situation in the United States. (YO)
