the chancellor of ChiliAlberto van Klaveren, pointed out this Friday, May 5 that Peru “has the right” to assume the Presidency pro tempore of the Pacific alliancewhich Mexico refuses to deliver due to its differences with the Government of Dina Boluarte.
“We are concerned about the issue. We have supported Peru’s aspirations and we continue to do so because we consider that Peru obviously has the right to assume the Presidency”, stated the minister in dialogue with the Chilean media ADN.
Van Klaveren indicated that Chile’s objective is “toprevent this situation, which we assume is temporary, from definitively damaging what we have managed to advance” in the commercial bloc, made up of Mexico, Colombia, Peru and Chile.
“We cannot imagine either Pacific alliance) without Mexico, which is a very important economy”, he added.
President Boluarte Zegarra has repeatedly accused her Mexican counterpart, Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO), of not wanting to make the transfer because “keep supporting” to ex-president Pedro Castillo, who was removed from office after attempting to carry out a coup on December 7 and is being held in the Barbadillo prison.
“I do not want to hand over (the presidency) to a government that I consider spurious”, AMLO said at a press conference on February 17.
In a letter sent to the rest of the bloc’s countries a month ago, Boluarte warned Mexico that not formalizing the transfer could lead to “international responsibilities”.
“For us the most important thing is to preserve the legacy of the Pacific Alliance and avoid a breakalthough there is an important difference to this day, especially between Mexico and Peru, and Colombia to a lesser extent”, said the foreign minister of Chile.
