Radio signal from a taxi in Argentina interferes with a NASA transmission

A radio signal from a taxi Argentinain which a driver asks for directions, slipped into a transmission of the Pot which followed the activities of astronauts on the International Space Station.

“1-5-0, did you say, from Irigoyen?”is heard in the middle of the live broadcast that NASA made days ago while two Russian astronauts walked outside the International Space Station to change a radiator.

In the transmission, you hear those words in Spanish attributed to the intrusion of an open microphone due to carelessness.

But the Argentine journalist Manuel Mazzanti captured when listening to that transmission that it was a voice with an Argentine accent asking for an address with a street that bears the name of either former President Hipólito Yrigoyen (1852-1933) or former Buenos Aires senator and governor Bernardo de Irigoyen (1822-1906).

Mazzanti, who is dedicated to informatively covering space issues from the United States, then made a post on social networks with the video of the interfered transmission that went viral.

According to local media, last Tuesday, at the time of the interference, the International Space Station was 430 kilometers above Argentine territory.

“The band used by radio taxis is UHF. It is not surprising because the Space Station makes a radio amateur transmission once a month on that same frequency and that is why they pick it up. In this case, something was left open when they were doing a major spacewalk to change a radiator.”explained the scientific popularizer Esteban Tablón in statements this Sunday to the LN+ channel.

Tablón pointed out that the Space Station, which orbits the Earth many times per day, was at that time in the early hours of Tuesday “exactly above Buenos Aires.

“There are 430 kilometers in a straight line, without any type of interference or obstacle. Apparently the frequency with which they communicate with radio amateurs on Earth was left open. There came a very Buenos Aires radio taxi in the Space Station in an audio broadcast to the whole world ”held.
