After the visit of Tatarstan President Rustam Minnikhanov, Moldova will consider declaring the Russian diplomat persona non grata. According to RBC, this was announced by the press secretary of the Moldovan government, Daniel Voda.

According to Voda, two employees of the Russian embassy demonstrated “inappropriate behavior towards state bodies”, for which they will be deprived of diplomatic cards of access to certain areas of the Chisinau airport.

“They behaved incorrectly. <…> Access cards to the territory of Chisinau International Airport will be confiscated from these officials. In addition, Prime Minister Dorin Recean indicated the need to consider declaring one of the Russian embassy employees persona non grata due to this inappropriate behavior,” the spokesman said.

The decision will be announced to the Russian Ambassador to Moldova, Oleg Vasnetsov, who will be summoned to the Foreign Ministry in connection with this.

The decision of the Moldovan authorities is connected with the behavior of the Russians, when on April 17 the border guards denied entry into the country to the President of Tatarstan Rustam Minnikhanov. He was supposed to take part in the Peoples’ Friendship Congress in the city of Comrat, the capital of Gagauzia. The authorities of this autonomy support the policy of rapprochement with Russia.

According to Minnikhanov, upon arrival he was informed that he was recognized as an undesirable person. Later, the Moldovan border police denied reports that the politician was recognized as persona non grata. It stated that Minnikhanov was denied entry due to an attempt to “intervene in the internal affairs of the country.”

The Russian Foreign Ministry called Chisinau’s decision “another unfriendly step” in order to undermine the “traditionally close interaction between the regions” of Russia and Moldova. “We are sure that such an anti-Russian course does not find support in the broad circles of the Moldovan public,” said Maria Zakharova, a representative of the department.
