Thieves stole nearly $1 million in gold from a mining project in southern Argentina run by Vancouver-based Patagonia Gold Corp.
The Canadian miner denounced on Monday the theft of 500 ounces of gold from its Cap-Oeste gold project, in the southern Argentine province of Santa Cruz.
As reported by the company in a statement, in the robbery, perpetrated at dawn on Monday, the thieves took some “500 ounces of gold equivalent, which represents approximately one month of production from the Lomada and Cap-Oeste projects”, reported the company’s CEO, Christopher van Tienhoven.
“No employees were fatally injured during the robbery, although three suffered minor injuries. The theft has been reported to the appropriate Argentine authorities and the company is working with them to investigate the incident.”, indicated the company.
According to local media, the criminals took a truck loaded with gold bars.
Following the robbery, Patagonia Gold It said it has suspended production while the incident is investigated and the company determines how to implement additional safety measures.
The Cap-Oeste gold project is located near the town of La Bajada, about 70 kilometers from the city of Gobernador Gregores (about 2,400 kilometers south of Buenos Aires), in Santa Cruz.
Gold was trading at $1,995 an ounce on Monday.
