The EU Chief Observer will be in Caracas during Election Day

The head of the Electoral Observation Mission of the European Union (MOE-UE) and Venezuela, Isabel Santos, will carry out her work in the local and regional elections this Sunday in Caracas and its metropolitan area, where it will visit several voting centers, the community bloc reported this Saturday.

Following the EU methodology, Santos will observe the election day and talk with the media, the EU-EOM detailed in a statement.

The EU-EOM, the first observation mission that the 27 members have sent to Venezuela in 15 years, has deployed a team of 11 analysts since October 14.

They were joined by 44 long-term observers, 34 short-term observers, nine members of the European Parliament and more than 30 observers recruited locally from the diplomatic corps accredited in Venezuela.

On voting day, the mission will have about 130 observers who will visit voting centers in 23 states of the country.

On Tuesday, two days after the elections, Santos will issue a preliminary statement, as established by the norms of the European missions.

The presence of the EU-EOM has been criticized by the number two of Chavismo, Diosdado Cabello, who has asked his supporters to mistrust EU observers, since – he said – their work “is based on the discrediting” of the process.

In this regard, the chief observer was surprised and denied that they have “a prepared report,” as Cabello has assured.

“The great difficulty of this mission is that we are here, we observe until the end, and we produce the report based on all the reports that all the observers provide us (…) that type of statement is something very rare for me, very surprisingly, ”Santos said last Thursday.
