The Justice Department of USA reported on Saturday that it has launched an investigation into a series of leaked documents, many of them related to Ukraineand that have been disseminated on the Internet.
The leak appears to include secret intelligence reports and assessments that not only concern Ukraine and Russia, but also very sensitive analysis on US allies.
“We have been in communication with the Defense Department regarding this matter and have launched an investigation,” a Justice Department spokesman told AFP.
A steady trickle of leaked documents and slides has been posted on Twitter, Telegram, Discord and other social networks and chat sites for several days.
The Pentagon stated Friday that it was “actively reviewing the matter” and had referred this case to the Justice Department.
US officials told The Washington Post that some documents had been tampered with, but that many others were consistent with the CIA World Intelligence Review reports that are shared at a high level within the White House, the Pentagon and the State Department.
Defense analysts say the leak of such documents is valuable to Moscow by demonstrating the extent to which US intelligence has penetrated the Russian military apparatus, according to US media.
Other documents contain information about the internal debate in the governments of the United States’ allies.
Among the documents, for example, there were discussions over the debate in South Korea over whether to provide the United States with artillery shells for use in Ukraine, said The New York Times.
