In Japan, 1.5 million people live isolated from society

One and a half million people of working age live isolated from society in Japanand almost 20% attribute their isolation to the pandemicaccording to a study by the Japanese government, the first carried out by the authorities.

The phenomenon affects about 2% of people between the ages of 15 and 64, that is, 1.46 million of people, according to this research conducted in November 2022 and published last weekend.

The reason most frequently cited by people living in such isolation is having left their job, closely followed by the covid-19 pandemic, a reason cited by 18% of those surveyed between the ages of 15 and 39, and a twenty% in the range of 40 to 64 years.

Other reasons are the fact of suffering from depression or having suffered bullying at school or the workplace.

These people are known in Japan as “hikikomori”, and these are people who avoid social activities such as going to school or work and who, for at least six months, have only gone out to shop or practice a hobby.

“Some people correspond to our definition of hikikomori, because with the covid they were discouraged from going out and ended up having less contact with society,” Koji Naito, a government official, told AFP on Wednesday.
