The three politicians joined last week in a protest where hundreds of students and teachers filled the chamber to urge lawmakers to pass gun control laws following a school shooting that killed three children and three adults in Nashville, the capital of the United States. state.

During the protests last week, Jones chanted “No action, no peace!” with a banner with the message “Protect children, not weapons”, while Pearson spoke about gun violence through a megaphone. The Democratic legislators decided to join the chants of the protesters who were in the gallery and, according to national media, they shouted “Power to the people” through a megaphone.

For this reason, the Republicans of the House of Representatives presented a resolution on Monday for Johnson, Jones and Pearson, noting that these three legislators “knowingly and intentionally caused disorder and dishonor” in the room. Tennessee House Speaker Cameron Sexton called it a “insurrection” and asserted that Democrats had committed “multiple violations” of General Assembly rules.

In a statement, the president of Joe Bidenhas reacted to the expulsion of the legislators and has described the vote as “shocking, undemocratic and unprecedented”.

“Instead of debating the matter, these Republican legislators have chosen to punish, silence and expel the representatives elected by the people of Tennessee,” Biden stressed and repeated his request to Congress to approve legislation that restricts the sale of weapons .
