Palestinian militias from the Gaza Strip 44 rockets were fired this morning at Israel, in a new day of violence marked by Israeli retaliatory bombardments both in the Palestinian enclave and against objectives of the Hamas Islamist movement in southern Lebanon.
Of the total number of projectiles launched, reported the Army, nine were unsuccessful shots, 12 hit the Mediterranean Sea and 23 crossed into Israeli territory. Among those who crossed, 14 fell into unpopulated areas, eight were intercepted by security systems israeli air defense and one hit a residence in the Sderot community, causing damage but no injuries.
A military spokesman further specified that the Israeli retaliatory bombings achieved three goals of the Palestinian group Hamas in southern Lebanon and 10 targets in the Gaza Strip. These attacks come after a significant voltage surge yesterday, with the launch of 36 rockets from Lebanon – the largest attack from that country since 2006 – and seven shells from Gaza.
Israel held accountable Palestinian groups for the shooting from Lebanon and warned today that it will not allow Hamas to “operate from inside” that country. An Israeli military spokesman stressed that they assume that yesterday’s shooting was carried out with the knowledge of the Lebanese Shiite group Hezbollah and added that they also consider “the State of Lebanon responsible for each aggression that emanates from its territory.”
Asked about the continuation of hostilities, the spokesman made it clear that “no one wants an escalation at this time” and that if the attacks cease, the bombings will stop. However, the Army announced this Thursday the deployment of infantry troops and artillery on the borders with Gaza and Lebanon, in order to “strengthen the defense against possible scenarios.”
The current escalation of tension began in the early hours of Wednesday with clashes between Israeli police and faithful Palestinians in the Al Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem I’m busy. These disturbances left a balance of more than 30 Palestinians injured and some 350 arrested, and triggered the launching -from Gaza- of the first rockets of the current exchange of fire.
