The President of France, Emmanuel Macronhe stated this Thursday before his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinpingwhich knows that it can trust China to reason with Russia and to sit down again at the negotiating table.

“Russian aggression against Ukraine You have dealt a blow to (international) stability,” Macron told President Xi. “I know I can count on you to bring Russia back to sanity and we all sit back at the negotiating table,” he asserted during his State visit to the Asian giant.

For his part, Xi Jinping has assured that both countries, France and China, have “the capacity and responsibility” to “get over your differences” and commit to cooperation in favor of world peace. “We have the ability and responsibility to overcome differences and obstacles to maintain a stable, mutually beneficial, entrepreneurial and dynamic association. In this way, we will practice true multilateralism in favor of world peace, stability and prosperity”, said the President receiving Macron at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.

According to the official text, Xi has not mentioned the war in Ukraine and limited himself to commenting that, as permanent members of the UN Security Council, China and France must be “firm defenders of a multipolar world” and of a ” greater democracy in international relations”.

The French president landed this Wednesday in Beijing, where in addition to his bilateral meeting with Xi he will hold a three-way meeting, to which the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen. Macron is the second European leader to travel to China – after Pedro Sanchez last week– since Xi met Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow to explain his peace proposals for the war in Ukraine and show the strength of their relationship.
