Lawyer Stella Assangewife of Julian Assange, has warned in Brussels that “the future of journalism is at stake” if the WikiLeaks founder extradited to the United States, where he is accused of espionage and computer intrusion.

“There is a before and after if this is allowed to go ahead, it will be the dismantling of our democratic rights. It is a journey towards a total collapse of democracy, the rule of law and the freedom of the press,” Stella Assange has warned, at a press conference on the occasion of the Brussels Millennium International Documentary Film Festival.

In this contest the documentary is projected ‘Ithaka’ (2021), directed by Ben Lawrencewhich shows the experiences of Assange’s family, especially his wife and father, during the campaign they are promoting to prevent the Australian’s extradition.

Stella Assange has stated that, with this film, they want the public “to have exact knowledge” of the situation in which the founder of WikiLeaks finds himself “from a different perspective than the one that has been offered to them”.

Assange is incarcerated since 2019 in a maximum security British prisonawaiting his extradition to the United States, where he is accused of 17 crimes of espionage and computer intrusion for disclosing confidential documents on the Guantánamo naval base or the wars in Afghanistan and Iraqamong others.

According to Stella Assange, with the current charges, her husband faces 175 years in prison in the United States for, in his opinion, “having thoroughly revealed war crimes, including the murder of civilians” committed by the US Army.

“He is being silenced, his voice is being muffled in prison”

“He is being silenced, his voice is being muffled in prison, because he is probably one of the best-known public intellectuals linked to criticism of the war industry,” his wife Stella said.

“The US has created a new pattern under which you can go after any journalist anywhere in the world. A country could now say ‘I don’t like what you post about us, I don’t care if you’re Belgian in Belgium, Belgian freedom laws don’t apply to you and I’m going to extradite you,'” she said.

In November 2022the media that supported the WikiLeaks platform in disclosing confidential documents, including The New York Times, the world, The country, Der Spiegel and Guardianasked by letter to the United States Government to abandon the process against Assange by posing, according to them, a threat to press freedom.

human rights organizations Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch They have demanded the withdrawal of all charges against Assange in the United States, although his wife regretted at the press conference that Amnesty had not classified the founder of WikiLeaks as a “prisoner of conscience”.
