The regions of the country where crimes occur the most are: Lima, Arequipa, La Libertad and San Martín.
Peru registers 132 femicides so far in 2021, the same figure with which the country closed all of 2020 and 4% higher than the 127 cases reported between January and November of last year, according to the Ombudsman’s Office yesterday.
Faced with this increase in cases, the institution urged the State in a statement to strengthen its permanent role and design integrated actions for the prevention, care and eradication of this crime in Peru, where every two and a half days a woman dies at the hands of a man for the simple fact of being.
According to the Ombudsman’s Office, the regions with the highest occurrence of femicides were Lima (32), where a third of the population is concentrated, followed by Arequipa (10), La Libertad (9) and San Martín (7), he refers EFE.
A recent report by the institution on the femicides registered in the South American country during the COVID-19 pandemic warned that the rates of this scourge were not significantly impacted compared to previous years, when the health emergency was not present.
On the contrary, “the unavailability of care services made the registry of some other cases invisible and did not allow adequate attention to the problem,” said the Ombudsman.
In addition, he recalled that, according to the characteristics identified in the femicides that occurred in Peru over the past 8 years, the “most dangerous” space for women, most of whom are of childbearing age (18-25 years), is their own home. And his main aggressor is usually his romantic partner or ex-partner, as confirmed by the 2021 figures, according to which 66 of the 132 femicides were allegedly executed by the victims’ partner.
Of the total number of cases reported so far this year, the Ombudsman’s Office specified that 57 alleged perpetrators of these femicides are in preventive detention, that is, 43%.
Another 29 remain unknown, 19 are in preliminary investigation, 6 in preparatory investigations, 11 have not been found and 7 have committed suicide.
Faced with this situation, The Ombudsman’s Office urged the National Specialized Justice System (SNEJ) to strengthen the articulated work between its institutions members to improve the investigation and punishment of cases of violence against women, especially femicide.
Likewise, it requested the same instance to design strategies and implement interoperability for a necessary articulation and unified records that allow better processing of the information on the cases.
It also demanded the approval of a minimum work plan to guarantee the operation of all violence care services in crisis contexts such as the current one.
On the other hand, the institution urged the Ministry of Women and Vulnerable Populations to strengthen the National Prevention Strategy to reduce, in the medium term, the incidence of acts of violence, which should involve actions related to reducing tolerance in the face of this situation. and immediate attention to the victims.
