Polish farmers will receive EUR 29.5 million from the EU budget for losses caused by grain imports from Ukraine. The representatives of the Member States accepted the proposal of the European Commission in this matter.
It is allowed to double this amount from the national budget. This means that the support may amount to almost EUR 60 million, or about PLN 280 million. In this aid package, apart from Poland, money will also go to Bulgaria – almost EUR 17 million and Romania – slightly over EUR 10 million. As reported by Beata Płomecka, a correspondent of Polish Radio, consultations began on Thursday with the European Commission on the next support package in the amount of EUR 75 million for five countries, of which approx. EUR 30 million for Poland
Mateusz Morawiecki: “Ukrainian grain destabilizes our market”
The EU decision is a breakthrough. The case of Ukrainian grain infuriated Polish farmers. Politicians also reacted to the situation. During Wednesday’s press conference, Mateusz Morawiecki assured that the government wants to solve the issue of grain imports from Ukraine to Poland. As he reported, a “round table” on the situation on the market has begun at the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. – We are ready to help and export this grain to Africa, but we did not agree to this and we do not agree that this grain should reach the Polish market and destabilize local markets – added the Prime Minister. – We will send a letter to the European Commission with a demand for immediate action, the use of all instruments, available procedures to limit the impact of Ukrainian grain on the markets of countries neighboring Ukraine – he said.
A government spokesman also commented on the case. Piotr Mueller emphasized in the conversation that Poland can support the export of Ukrainian grain to African countries, but the situation of our farmers is a priority. “To this end, we will ask the European Commission to take appropriate action, including the possibility of reintroducing customs duties if grain enters Polish territory” – explained Piotr Mueller. Other issues, he added, include: the announced aid PLN 600 million of direct subsidies – some kind of compensation for cereal producers and additional funds for the construction of agricultural silos and warehouses, as well as special measures regarding special credit funds for farmers with low interest rates.
On Thursday, the media reported on a possible compromise. The round table resulted in the signing of a joint document. – There is an agreement. It is very good that the talks continue without cameras, because we would probably never reach an agreement. I would also appeal not to create a person on whom everything depends – Henryk Kowalczyk, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Agriculture, told journalists immediately after the meeting with farmers. However, not all farmers are satisfied with the talks. Further negotiations were announced by Michał Kołodziejczak, the leader of AgroUnia.
