The airline Low cost JetSmart inaugurated this Tuesday the route that will unite Montevideo with Rio de Janeiro in a little less than three hours and that will have three weekly frequencies throughout the year.
Darío Ratinoff, commercial manager of said company, told EFE at the Carrasco International Airport that the trips will take place on Airbus A320 and Airbus A321 planes.
For his part, the Minister of Tourism of Uruguay, Tabaré Viera, spoke with the press and celebrated the inauguration of a route that will allow the country “keep growing” in air connectivity.
“That is a priority for tourism, because if there is no connectivity we do not have tourists. This is very good news.”pointed out the holder of the portfolio.
In accordance with this, he pointed out that the new route that the airline JetSmart will make, announced on December 13, will unite Montevideo with a city “very interesting” to which many Uruguayans will travel and from which many Brazilian tourists will arrive.
“It is a market that has historically represented 15% to 20% of foreign visitors, but one that has enormous potential”Viera said, referring to Brazil.
He added that in the summer season some 30,000 more tourists arrived in Uruguay from that country and pointed out that they do not only do so in summer, but also take advantage of other times of the year to visit places like Montevideo and Colonia.
Asked about Uruguay’s weakest point in terms of air connectivity, the minister said that one of the main ones is the United States.
“We still need to improve a lot. As a direct connection we only have American Airlines flights which is seasonal. The last flight of the season has just been announced and now until October we don’t have direct flights.”he pointed.
However, he added that there are flights through other countries such as Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia and Panama.
Finally, the minister spoke about the tourism situation and said that he believes that the pandemic is behind us, and that after this, many people have chosen to take vacations and travel the world.
