Two years in jail. It is the sentence that a Russian court has imposed this Tuesday on the father of a girl who made drawings in favor of peace at school in Ukraine and that he was accused of publishing messages on social networks in which he contradicted the official position of the Kremlin on the invasion of the neighboring country.

The man, 54 years old and exclusively in charge of his daughter, had claimed that he had not published these messages, but remains in search and capture after managing to escape from house arrest before the sentence was made official. In fact, the courtroom in the south of Moscow where the trial took place has broken into a applause when the news of his escape has been known.

The case has become a symbol of restrictions on freedom of expression in Russiaafter it came to light that the man had already been fined when her daughter’s teachers called the police for the drawings of the minor, who was 12 years old at the time of the events.

The girl was supposed to make a painting in favor of the Russian Armed Forces, but instead drew the Russian and Ukrainian flags along with the messages: “No to war” and “Glory to Ukraine”. It was after this case became known on the Internet that the Russian authorities began the legal proceedings that led to the sentence on Tuesday.
