No changes were made to the previously agreed regulations. There is only a declaration confirming that the Commission will propose regulations allowing cars with synthetic fuels to run. The rules are due to be finally adopted by member states’ environment ministers, who meet on Tuesday.
The ban on the sale of combustion cars is getting closer. Agreement in the EU. Poland vs
From the beginning of work on these regulations, Poland strongly opposed the introduction of a ban on new emissions after 2035. She argued that this was too short a time given to the industry to prepare and that the cars would be too expensive for most citizens. Today, Italy and Poland were against these provisions, while Bulgaria and Romania abstained. Please note that this ban only applies to new cars. Those produced before 2035 will still be available on the market, and thus also petrol and diesel at stations.
The green light for final approval of the legislation was possible because last week it reached an agreement with , which until then had formed a so-called blocking minority. They insisted that even after 2035 it would be possible to register new cars with internal combustion engines powered by e-fuels, i.e. climate-neutral artificial fuels produced using green electricity.
New combustion cars banned in the EU from 2035
The new regulations are part of the so-called climate package “Fit for 55”. By 2035, the European Union wants to reduce the use of new passenger cars and vans by 100%. In practice, this means that in 12 years you will not be able to buy a new combustion engine vehicle. However, it will still be possible to use, sell and buy used internal combustion vehicles.
Intermediate emission reduction targets for 2030 have been set at 55%. for passenger cars and 50 percent. for vans. It has also been agreed that from 2025 it will publish a report every two years in which it will assess progress towards zero-emission road traffic.
